This is an excellent pair of George Lawrence Wooly Leather Chaps from Portland, Oregon. The wooly (also called woollies) chaps date to circa 1930-1940’s and shows a fine adornment of Angora Wooly Brown hair along the heavy leather shotgun chaps. The belt shows a fine basket weave hand tooled belt that culminates in the “LAWRENCE PORTLAND, OR” stamping on the belt. The back of the belt shows an iron buckle with nickel plating. George Lawrence Company was founded in Portland, Oregon in the year 1857. During the companies prime years they became the most renowned and largest producer of saddles in the Northwest. Many of the saddles were shipped from the West coast Portland saddlery shop to the gold strike area’s in Alaska, the Yukon, Montana Territory and the Dakotas. Not only was the shop known for their outstanding saddles they became famous for their production of exquisite leather goods such as handgun holsters, fishing creels, cartridge belts, slings, scabbards, chaps, etc… Wooly chaps are one of the most iconic clothing of cowboys from the Wild West. Wooly chaps were the desired style for any cowboy worth his snuff during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The angora goatskin fur was a fancy adornment to the chaps, but also served a purpose and would keep the wearer warm. George Lawrence made very few sets of Wooly Chaps with this being a rare and desirable set. Other Lawrence Wooly chaps have sold at auction for as much as over $3,000 at Rock Island Auctions 4/21/2012 sale and Wooly Chaps at auction for as much as $12,000 for a set sold at Brian Lebel’s Old West Auction 6/21/2007 sale. The set shows signs of use with some slight cracking and scuffs, but overall is in solid good to fair condition with the angora hair and leather belt displaying prominently. The chaps measure overall 42”L with the belt being 43”L from the tip to the end of the buckle. Some George Lawrence chaps have been valued at over $6,000 such as the set of tacked gamblers batwings without additional provenance, with this set being of much better collectability. Shown in the lot are two digital images of cabinet cards with early Cowboys wearing George Lawrence Wooly Chaps, these are not included in the lot.
