This is a stunning Ghost Dance revival painted large frame drum from the Oglala Lakota Sioux Running Elk family from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation from the ex-collection of Jim Aplan of Piedmont, S.D. The large drum exhibits a wood, what appears to be old plywood bent wood inner frame with wetted and stretched parfleched buffalo hide covering it which is tied with rawhide on the back. The entire surface is covered in pigment paints showing a green background over yellow on the front and various Ghost Dance symbols such as the waterbird and four-point morning stars done in black, yellow and white paints. The outside edge has a painted red finish. All the paints have a nice, faded appearance. Provenance: Collected from the Lakota Sioux Running Elk family at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation by Jim Aplan around circa 1970’s. This is truly a stunning large frame drum with bold, classic Ghost Dance Revival imagery with good collection history. Back has some tufts of old trade clothe tied on. Measures overall 19.75-inches in diameter by 2 5/8-inches thick. The drum appears to have some preservation on it.
