The lot features an original very scarce photograph of the Great Omaha Powwow Dance of the Cheyenne’s in Montana circa 1891. The original photograph is in a boudoir large cabinet card size and is marked “Omaha Dance / No. 1515 / CM”. The photograph shows the Cheyenne Native American Indians in the documented Omaha Dance ceremonial dress showing a bunch of eagle / hawk feathers at their rear with mohawks and a single feather headdress. This piece also shows braves and warriors wearing sleigh bell dance belts which run around the waist down the legs and attach again at the calf. The photograph shows immense detail of the Montana town with the church or school house in the background with large bell, covered wagon, various Cheyenne braves, several Chief’s, Indian scouts, and various western cowboy figures. The photograph is one of only two known to exist that documented this great event with the other being shown as a digital copy in the pictures of this piece (but is not included). Truly a wonderful authentic original photograph done by a Montana Photographer. The piece measures 8 1/2" wide by 5 1/4" tall with the photo measuring 7 1/4" wide by 4 1/2" tall.
