Featured in this lot are three (3) Harold Copping Colour Lithographs of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Poem, "Song of Hiawatha" characters, copyright 1902 C. H. Allen, published 1904. In this vibrant and enchanting colour lithograph, artist Harold Copping brings to life the timeless love story of Hiawatha and Minnehaha. Figures are delicately rendered with intricate details that showcase Copping's mastery of his craft. Each brushstroke seems to breathe life into these beloved literary figures. Each colour lithograph is individually framed in heavy cardboard frames, their front face borders illustrated with scenes from the poem. The Song of Hiawatha is an 1855 epic poem in trochaic tetrameter by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow which features Native American characters. The epic relates the fictional adventures of an Ojibwe warrior named Hiawatha and the tragedy of his love for Minnehaha, a Dakota woman. C. H. Allen was the Cedarine Allen Company, makers of piano and furniture polish in the late 19th century. These lithographs were gifted as "advertising novelties". Reverse sides of the larger pieces read, "Presented with compliments of Cedarine Allen Company Manufacturers of CEDARINE The Standard Piano and Furniture Polish. Clinton, N. Y. FRAME PAT'D FEB'Y 23, 04". The frames are shadowbox style with wood inset trim. A series of these were made by G.H. Allen copyrighted under Birch Bark in 1902. The borders are meant to replicate birch bark in appearance. Each piece features a portion of the poem which the respective lithograph portrays. Lithographs are in nice condition, frame fronts exhibit fading that blend into the illustrated scenes, edges are rounded from normal handling. Largest frames measure 9.25"W x 11.25"L, smallest is 5.25"W x 6.75"L
