The lot features an original Herring & Co. Maker New York railroad strong box safe from circa 1890. This is the largest strong box we have offered for sale showing an astonishing 16" tall X 24" wide X 16" deep and weighing in at ___ lbs. The piece shows a heavy blacksmith forged iron construction with a large skeleton key brass locking system. A strong box of this incredible high-craftsmanship would have been most likely been from Wells Fargo, but the typical “Railway Express agency Wells Fargo” yellow stenciling has been lost over many years of use. The strong box would have been used as protected storage for important documents, bank notes, gold bars, ammunition, valuables and other important object when transported through the Old West. The box comes with the original very large skeleton key. Originally the box would have had a double locking system with a lock in the actual heavy door and a lock in the swinging arm, the second lock in the swinging arm or lock cover is no longer present. This is truly a wonderful piece from a long time Bozeman, Montana Western artifact collection.
