Offered in this lot we have a Vintage Hudson's Bay Company Four Point Wool Trade Blanket, circa 1900s-1920s. Showing a beautifully crafted wool construction to this blanket all done in a iconic Hudson's Bay design with four points along the side of the blanket. Points are the short lines woven into the side of each blanket just above the bottom bar or set of stripes. The “point” system was invented by French weavers in the mid-18th century as a means of indicating the finished size (area) of a blanket, not its value in terms of beaver pelts, as is sometimes believed. The word point derives from the French empointer, meaning “to make threaded stitches on cloth.” HBC’s first pointed blankets were made in 1780. Blankets of 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 points were most common during the fur trade era. The 100% wool blanket features a black stripe design against a white background. Intact original Hudson's Bay Company tag attached in the corner. The condition of this blanket is good overall with small stain, wear from age and use. Measures 68"W x 84"L.
