This lot includes a First Edition of "Hunting in the Great West (Rustlings in the Rockies) Hunting and Fishing by Mountain and Stream" by G.O. Shields, 1881, publisher Belford, Clarke & Co. Chicago and New York. Shields recounts his hunting trips throughout the American West, including the Rockies and the prairies. He describes the challenges and thrills of hunting big game, as well as his interactions with native peoples and other adventurers. George Oliver Shields (1846-1925) who also wrote under the pseudonym Coquina, was the editor of a pioneering American magazine for outdoors sports, Recreation, where he also took on a role as an activist for the conservation of wildlife. The blue cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nice overall condition, gold gilt is still bright, scuffing and fading fading noted on covers and spine, loose spine at hinges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 5"W x x 7.5"L x 1.25"D, weight is 1lb, 4oz.
