Offered in this lot is an 1886 First Edition of "In the Heart of the Sierras" By J. M. Hutchings. J.M. Hutchings (1820-1902) was a pioneer of the tourist industry in Yosemite. He was one of the first to visit there in winter. “In the Heart of the Sierras” was Hutchings' great achievement and contains a great deal more than an account of Hutchings' personal experiences. The book is bound in green linens with an illustrated and gilt cover and spine and an engraving of a grizzly bear on the back cover. The paper is guilt edged. In the book are thirty-one full page plates from photographs, many illustrations, and a large folding map. The book is in good condition, with minor wear to be expected from its 135 year age. The book measures 9" X 7" X 1 3/4".
