For your consideration is a Rare J.B. Owens Pottery Utopian Vase, Native American Warrior, circa 1896, signed by artist Cora McCandless. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including ancient Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Persian and Far Asian artifacts. Owens Pottery was founded by John B. Owens in 1885. Owens began producing art pottery in 1896 with the introduction of the Utopian line, which soon brought Owens Pottery to national acclaim, with several awards. Popular lines included Utopian, Lightweight, Lotus, Henri Deux, and Matte Green. The Utopian line competed directly with the Rookwood Standard Glaze and the Weller Louwelsa, with artistic works on dark brownish backgrounds. Most designs were floral but also included animals, landscapes, Native Americans, famous people and more. Non-floral designs were produced in smaller quantities and are fairly scarce. This stunning vase features a Native American male wearing a bone breastplate while also wearing two feathers in his hair. A beautiful portrait reminiscent of Edward Curtis' famous photographs of Native Americans in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The artist's initials are located at the bottom edge right below the portrait. 5 JB. OWENS UTOPIAN 1067 is imprinted on the concave base. Vase in wonderful preserved condition, crackle observed throughout. Measures 15"H, base 4.5" diameter, weight 3lb, 12oz.
