Featured in this lot is this collection of J.J. Audubon framed colored offset prints circa early-to-mid 1900's. There are three off set prints in this collection. The first is "Pileated Woodpecker" and was engraved, printed and colored by R. Havell and is marked on the front as follows: Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S - Pileated Woodpecker - Picus Pileatus. Linn - Adult Male. Adult Female. 2 Young Males, 3.4. - Racoon Grape. Vitis aestivalis - Engraved, Printed, and colored by R. Havell. The next is "Columbia Jay" and was engraved, printed, and colored by R Havell and is marked on the front as follows: Drawn from Nature and published by John J. Audubon F.R.S's L&E. ELS &c - Columbia Jay Male 1. F 2 - Garrulus Ultramarinus - Engraved, Printed, and Colored by R Havell Junr London. 1830. The last is "Cardinal Grosbeak" and was engraved, printed, and colored by R. Havell and is marked on the front of the artwork as follows: Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon F.R.S. F.L.S. - Cardinal Grosbeak - Fringilla Cardinalis. Bonap - Male 1. Female 2 - Wild Almond - Engraved, Printed, and Colored by R. Havell London 1833. London. Audubon was was an American self-trained artist, naturalist, and ornithologist. His combined interests in art and ornithology turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations, which depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book titled The Birds Of America, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon is also known for identifying 25 new species. The condition of this collection of off set prints is well preserved with some slight wear to the frames but there artwork shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this collection for each is 19 3/4" x 16 3/4" and the visible artwork measures 18 5/8" x 15 5/8". The collective weight of this collection of prints is 8lb 10oz.
