Included in this lot is the 1877 edition of "The American Family Robinson" by D. W. Belisle, Porter & Coates publishers. David Belisle was a newspaper publisher and author of several books, both fiction and nonfiction. This is a novel of the American West, which includes the finding of ancient relics of an advanced race, which had peopled America in the distant past. Mr. Duncan and his family travel across the West, encountering natural sights, buffalo, Indians, and many adventures as they attempt to traverse the still-undisclosed frontier of the American West. Considered a "lost race" novel, a popular precursor to 20th century American science fiction. This is an interesting tale that reflects attitudes towards the expansion of America, nature and Native Americans. In the 1870s, this novel equaled Robinson Crusoe in popularity as juvenile fiction. The green cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nice condition, front and back covers have a stamped illustration of a Native American on horseback hunting bison on the Plains, spine has a stamped illustration of a wolf amongst tall grasses. Gold gilt is still bright. Slight scuffing exhibited on edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning, frontispiece, tissue and front endpage exhibit foxing. Measures 4.375"W x 6.875"L x 1"D, weight is 14oz.
