Provided for you in this lot is one of the finest, numbers matching, engraved James Reid .22 caliber, combination "Kunckleduster" revolvers available on the collectors market! The Reid "MY FRIEND" is one of the most recognizable, yet difficult to find firearms of the mid 19th century. The revolver was manufactured in limited quantities between 1868 and 1882. Not only is this an exceptional example with matching serial numbers, it is further made more scarce because it has the uncommon, yet highly desirable sliding safety bar, under the frame, and in front of the spur trigger. Functioning of the Reid "MY FRIEND" was accomplished by simply pulling back the hammer and firing the weapon with the small exposed spur trigger. However, if less deadly force was called for, or if the pistol was out of ammo, one could hold the cylinder/frame in the palm of the hand with the little finger inserted through the hole in the grip, and use the gun as a "Knuckler" or a battering cugel. The original patent drawings for this unique handgun show this intended alternative use, and is depicted in the classic book "Firearms Curiosa", by Lewis Winant. A copy of this drawing is included. One of the more interesting and unusual of the popular hideout guns of the mid to late 1800's. The Reid "MY FRIEND" Knuckleduster found favor with prison guards, lawmen, as well as thugs and outlaws alike. To load and un-load the pistol, remove the cylinder pin, take out the cylinder, and use the pin to extract spent cartridges. Matching serial numbers are such a rarity with this gun due to the reverse thread pattern on the cylinder pin. Users would often try to remove the pin by rotating counter-clockwise, when no progress was made, the pliers usually came out, which typically ended in a snapped cylinder pin head. This attractive example has a solid brass frame, showing sharp factory scroll engraving on the sides, top, front, and backstrap. The brass has formed a mellow, mustard yellow patina, with no indications of polishing or cleaning. Additionally, the steel cylinder shows no signs of rust, cleaning or abuse. The revolver is marked in numerous places, reading; "MY FRIEND - PAT'D. DEC. 26. 1865" on the frame, over the cylinder. Surviving specimens are very scarcely appear in the collectors market today, and those that do often show heavy signs of use and abuse.
