Featured in this lot is a Jemez pottery drummer effigy made by Jemez member, Lupe Lucero Loretto, in the 1980-90s. "Sun Flower" Leonora Lupe Lucero-Loretto was born in 1943. She is half Jemez, half Laguna. She started making pottery sculptures at the age of 34, and her sister, Dorothy Trujillo, inspired her to continue. Lupe specializes in homemade, amusing Koshari storytellers, although she is not limited to them. She also creates hand-coiled nativities and other clay sculptures. She collects her own clay, sand, and other natural pigments from the hills of the Jemez pueblo, then cleans the clay, combines sand and clay, and begins hand coiling her sculptures. Lupe also paints her art with natural colors that she hand mixes, and she fires it traditionally, outside. The piece shows a man holding a drum and a drumstick with his mouth partially open. He is wearing a red / brown colored headband and has a red / brown painted necklace. Geometric shapes are seen on his stomach and arms as well as around his drum. The drumstick shows repairs and the headband shows wear and slight damage. It is signed on the bottom reading, "L. Lucero / Jemez". It shows good condition overall with slight wear from its age and the slight damage noted earlier, but no major signs of damage are noted. The piece measures 5 1/4" L x 4" W x 6 7/8" H and weighs 1lb 7oz.*
