In this lot is a beautiful, Native American pot crafted by Roberta Shendo of the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico.
Roberta Shendo was born in 1959 into the Corn Clan. She is the niece of master potter, Juanita Fragua, who is considered one of Jemez Pueblo's most prominent potters. She is the daughter of Geronima Shendo and Frank Shendo. Roberta learned from her mother and aunt Juanita. She digs her clay from the Jemez Reservation and creates her pottery the traditional way.
She has been an active potter since 1980. Her works are carried in many galleries and published in several books on Native American pottery. The polychrome designs are complex, and the area outside the principle design is stone polished to a smooth and glossy finish. This wonderful jar's two designs are bold. They are repeated only twice, once on front and then on the opposite side. By keeping the number of designs to only two, the potter was able to make each one large and prominent. The pot has a red base and design painted in red and black. The pot is signed on the bottom. The pot is 5" tall and 20" around, with a 4" opening. The pot is in very good condition with no obvious signs of damage.
