This is an excellent authentic original etching titled, “Horse Racing of Sioux Indians” by Karl Bodmer (1809-1893) dated 1840-1844 with the correct Bodmer blind stamp centered at the bottom of the etching and numbered: Vig. XXX. The artwork features a scene of Sioux Indians racing with quirts in hand and shows on lookers in the distance cheering the competitors on and shows Fort Pierre in the background with a Native village in the far off distance to the left of the racers. The etching reads as follows: Karl Bodmer pinx. ad nat. - Imp. de Bougeard - Du. Casse y Doherty se. - Pferderennen Der Sioux Indianer - Course Aux Chevaux Des Indiens Sioux - bei Fort Pierre - Pres du Fort Pierre - "Horse Racing of Sioux Indians" - near Fort Pierre - Coblenz bei J Holscher - London published by Ackermann & Co. go. Strand - Paris, Arthus Bertrand, editeur. The etching is shown in a professionally crafted display frame with a gold coloring with red speckling along the rim. Johann Karl Bodmer was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, zinc engraver, draughtsman, painter, illustrator and hunter. Known as Karl Bodmer in literature and paintings, as a Swiss and French citizen, his name was recorded as Johann Karl Bodmer and Jean-Charles Bodmer, respectively. The condition of this framed original etching is good with no obvious signs of damage to the artwork or the frame and in good overall display condition. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery. Truly an outstanding example. The measurements of this framed etching are 19 3/4" x 23 1/2" and the visible artwork measures 9 3/4" x 13 1/2". Identification #: E1099.
