Featured in this lot is this original first edition etching called "Crow Indians," by Carl Bodmer born 1809 and died 1893, the piece is from 1841 and shows the blind stamp centered at the bottom of the etching and the plate number shown is Vig. XIII. The etching shows a group of Crow Indians collaborating while wearing trade blankets and ceremonial garments with a number of Native men mounted in the background. They are shown on a hill side with clear sky above them. The etching reads as follows: Ch. Bodmer pinx. ad nat. - Imp. de Bougeard - Hurlimann sculp. - Crow Indianer - Indiens Corbeaux - "Crow Indians" - Coblenz bei J. Holscher - London Published by Ackermann & Co. go Strand - Paris, Arthus Bertrand editeur. The etching is shown inside a professionally crafted frame with gold coloration and red speckling to the rim of the frame. Johann Carl Bodmer was a Swiss-French printmaker, etcher, lithographer, zinc engraver, draughtsman, painter, illustrator and hunter. Known as Karl Bodmer in literature and paintings, as a Swiss and French citizen, his name was recorded as Johann Karl Bodmer and Jean-Charles Bodmer, respectively. The condition of this original etching is good with no obvious signs of damage to the artwork or the frame and shows good overall display condition. The measurements of this framed etching are 19 3/8" x 23 3/8" and the visible art measures 9 1/4" x 13 1/4". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert.
