Featured in this lot is this limited edition Cherokee Spirit Mask done by Kathryn Yauney circa 1992. Kathryn Yauney graduated from Nebraska's Chadron State College with degrees in both art and history. She has taught art on the Sioux Pine Indian Reservation and is a member of the Cherokee Nation. Natural South Dakota clay and mixed media are used in Kathryn's handcrafted creations. Beads are mixed with porcupine quills, antlers, horns, and particular furs to create spirit masks and sculptures that depict various facets of Native American culture. This is a limited edition mask numbered 8/45, a scarce piece of Kathryn's work. The mask is crafted from ceramic and features large deer antlers, a real fur headdress, bone earrings and different colored trade beads attached to the bone earrings. Painted on the face is a bull with large horns and red paint smeared over the eye left eye. The face shows great attention to detail and features the artist's signature on the bottom of the chin reading, "Yauney ©92 8/45". The head band shows colors of red, gold, blue and yellow. The bone necklace is shown with accents of gold and red. The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of obvious damage. Horns are loose. It measures approximately 22" in length, 13" in width and a depth of 10". It weighs 2 pounds and 8 ounces.
