The box shows a finely carved and painted large box titled "Eagle & Wolf Bentwood" dated September 2001, and signed by Rose Albert, a renowned Koyukon Athabascan artist. This is commonly referred to as Pacific Northwest Coast bentwood or bent wood storage or carrying box. Rose Albert is Koyukon Athabascan and is originally from Ruby, Alaska. Rose has been an artist since 2 years of age. She worked on the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System after high school and would paint on her free time doing commission work. She then attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico earning an associate’s degree in two dimensional art specializing in painting in 1981. Rose then returned to Alaska and finished in 32nd place at the iconic Iditarod dog sled race, being the first Alaska Native woman to get into the Iditarod. She began building Alaska Yellow Cedar boxes and carving wildlife, totemic art and Iditarod images in 1998. This box is signed / handwritten under the lid by Rose Albert and shows a nice large-medium Alaskan Yellow Cedar box with high relief carved lid showing an outstanding Eagle and Wolf totem figure / figures in classic Athabaskan pattern with original painted features and a raised beveled border. The box itself shows a beveled foot bordering the bottom with a band of totem / totemic incised carved design with black painting. This is truly a work of art which displays beautifully and one of the few if not only original box on the public market by Rose Albert. The box is done in a classic pattern, reminiscent of Argillite and bent wood Haida boxes. The box and lid together measure 12 5/8”W x 9.25”D x 6 7/8”H. Total weight of 4 lbs. 4 oz.*
