For your consideration is this pair of French taxidermied birds set in Black Forest style frames with curved glass attributed to the La Maison Ledot (The Ledot House) taxidermy boutique in Rue de Rivoli in Paris in the Late 1890s to Early 1900s. La Maison Ledot was a well-known French taxidermy establishment that operated in the late nineteenth / early twentieth century. La Maison Ledot excelled in making lifelike taxidermy exhibitions, which frequently included game birds and other wildlife. A significant part of their work was the "hanging game" approach, in which birds were mounted to appear dangling after a hunt. This style was popular in the late 1800s and demonstrated the taxidermist's ability to achieve realism. Typically, specimens from La Maison Ledot were signed to confirm their authenticity. The signature was frequently written in chalk on the internal backing of the display case. This style of signing shows that, while the signature may not be seen while the piece is shown, it acts as an internal indication of authenticity. For a company that was obviously once a large operation, very little is known about them. Le Maison Ledot was known for their oval frames and curved glass framing styles but were not known to have intricately carved Black Forest style frames. The frames feature intricate Black Forest style carvings with two animal heads set on the top of each, one features a deer head while the other features a boar. Leaf motifs can be seen around the animal heads and bordering the bottom of the frames. The original backings are still intact but the writing has faded and is hard to read. The first piece with the deer head carving shows two Redshank Woodcock wader birds in the hanging style. They are set in front of a green felt backing with a white chalk signature on the right hand side reading, "Bémen". The backing shows slightly legible writing reading, "La Bécasse De Chevalier Gris" translating to "The Gray Knight Woodcock". The second display, with the carved boar head shows a Red-legged Partridge, also known as a French Partridge and a Jack Snipe in the hanging style. This piece is also lined with green felt and is signed in white chalk reading, "Bémen". The original backing is intact but the writing is illegible. Both pieces show good condition overall with slight wear present, and slight cloudiness to the glass on the second piece mention, but no signs of major damage noted. Horns of the carved deer head fit snug but can be removed. They measure 32" in length x 19 1/2" in width x 6 1/2" in depth. They have a collective weight of 18 pounds and 12 ounces.
