The lot features a large wetted and stretched hide over wood hoop shield from the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians showing amazing polychrome painting of a masked running horse with several morning stars. The piece is attributed to Lakota Sioux artist John Young Buck, born in 1947 and works from the 1960-2000's. The late-20th Century piece shows a wetted and stretched hide over a bent wood willow branch hoop in a large size tied with thick cut hide in traditional form. The front shows a polychrome painted scene with blue border and yellow background with large white horse wearing a black mask with black hair, blue spots along the body, black adn red painted feet and morning star across the eye. The center of the shield also shows a bear tooth. The shield also shows four four-pointed morning stars in red with hide ties holding hide fringes with rolled tin jingle cones and stripped Turkey feathers with sinew tied red stroud wool trade clothe wraps. Above the horse is a rainbow of red, white and blues. The piece has a large size and is in good condition. From a Ranch in Red Lodge, Montana which also contains the two large John Young Buck feather headdresses. Measures overall 24" across by 32"L including the feather.
