The lot features a large wetted and stretched hide over wood hoop shield from the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians showing amazing polychrome painting of a pictorial painted warriors on horseback war party scene. The piece is attributed to Lakota Sioux artist John Young Buck, born in 1947 and works from the 1960-2000's. The late-20th Century piece shows a wetted and stretched hide over a bent wood willow branch hoop in a large size tied with thick cut hide in traditional form. The front shows a polychrome painted scene showing a war party with warrior’s on horse back and foot fighting with lance spears along with bow and arrows with feathered headdresses, war painted horses etc. The top edge of the shield is hide tied with a long dark blue stroud wool trade clothe which shows ribbon ties and various Indian hide tied fringes holding striped Turkey feathers with red stroud wool trade clothe wrappings. At the bottom of the war shield is a large section of dark blue stroud trade clothe with additional light blue ribbons. The back shows a burnished stamp signature of a war shield. Overall a beautiful detail piece in good condition. From a Ranch in Red Lodge, Montana which also contains the two large John Young Buck feather headdresses. Measures overall 23" across by 40"L including the feather.
