Featured in this lot is this large dinosaur coprolite from the Mesozoic era found in Utah. The Mesozoic Era is the second-to-last era of Earth's geological history, lasting from about 252 to 66 million years ago, comprising the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. Dinosaur Coprolite is the fossilized excretion of ancient animals. Coprolites are classified as trace fossils as opposed to body fossils, as they give evidence for the animal’s behavior (in this case, diet) rather than morphology. Coprolite gives scientists information about what the dinosaurs ate. If bone fragments are present it is likely that the coprolite is from a carnivore. If plant parts are found it is likely that the coprolite is from an herbivore. Usually a powerful microscope is needed to identify these undigested bits. This large coprolite can be dated around 65-200 million years ago, while the dinosaurs still roamed the lands around us. It shows colors of light brown, beige, light orange, and black throughout. The coprolite measures 8 1/4" L x 7 3/4" W.
