Offered in this lot is a Large Nigerian Polychrome Yoruba Gelede Mask, circa Early - Mid 20th Century. The western Yoruba people practice the Efe/Gelede cult to celebrate the mystical power (ashe) of elderly women. Concerning the ceremonies of the Gelede, practiced mainly in the western Yoruba kingdoms, the Gelede dancers are men. The masks are built on the same principle: a face (mask-helmet type) and a scene which develops on the top part of the mask. These are used in the context of masquerades dedicated to the "Supreme Mother" Iya Nla, Olokun or Yemoja according to the regions. Their appearance, which entertains the public, teaches him both the virtues of social life and reminds women in Yoruba society of their obligations towards others. Gelede masks are composed of two parts: the head and the superstructure. This elaborately carved superstructure features five birds biting a serpent. The head is carved with the classical Yoruba facial features: heavy eyelids, bulgy almond-shaped eyes, flared nose and compressed full lips. The pupils and nostrils are roughly pierced with circular holes. Three scarification lines are incised on the forehead and four on both cheeks. They are stained in black. These scarification lines are called pele, which many communities in south-western Yorubaland regard as ‘gems’ on the human face. The ears are shaped like question marks. Overall, the facial features exemplify supremacy, rigour and calm. Overall condition is good, appears that fire/smoke was used to coat the underside. Measures 14"L x 10.5"H x 11.5"W approximately. Weight approximate 3lb, 10oz
