This is a wonderful late-19th Century early reservation period tacked leather sheath and inlaid trade knife attributed to the Crow Native American Indians of Eastern Colorado. The sheath is made of thick brown harness saddle leather and is decorated in typical Crow and Blackfeet / Blackfoot fashion with old trade tacks along with a large cut out for the belt to go through. There is a harness leather tie strap attached. The old trade knife is a rare example documented as being made by French knife marker, Henri Bergson (1859-1941) with his name stamped onto one side of the blade. Bergson made fancier, presentation knives that were artful and stylized for the period and were used during the middle reservation period by the U.S. Government in the Western Plains region. The handle has an inlaid German silver shield and brass silver tacks on both sides as well as pewter poured guard. Bergson knives are unusual and hard to come by. Provenance: From a Cheyenne, Wyoming collection. The sheath measures 8 ½ inches long by 3 inches wide. The knife measures 11 ¼ inches in length.
