This is an extraordinary late-19th century to early-20th century Pomo coiled gift basket being fully feathered from California. The Pomo, typically from coastal Northern California, made this exquisite medium sized is a classic tight coiled example completely adorned with feathers, clamshell beads and abalone pendant beads. The Pomo used shell beads as money, making such a basket as this with so many beads a truly treasured item often given as special gifts. This example is truly a wonder being exceptionally jewel-like, shimmering with iridescent green feathers showing a row of clam shell beads along the top adorned further by a row of plume feathers (likely wester quail top knot feathers) and then further adorned with six hanging sections of clamshell beads and abalone pendant beads. Entire exterior is profusely decorated with indigenous bird feathers. This basket is truly a fine example showing well preserved condition with little feather loss and no apparent bead loss and shows a a six or seven point star pattern radiating from the bottom in iridescent feathers with diamond patterns framed in light brown to orange features showing a diamond like exquisite pattern in iridescent dark green and orange / tan. Measures overall 6.25-inches diameter not including the plume feathers by 3.75-inches high. These baskets are highly collectible and quite scarce ecspecialy in this fine of condition such as the Pomo feathered basket sold by Jackson Hole Art Auction with a start pattern and similar beads of the same 1890-1900 age which sold for $17,500 in May of 2026, the Pomo shell beaded and feathered basket sold by Royka's Gallery in Massachusets in April 2010 for $13,475 and Taos Auction Santa Fe, NM Pomo Feathered Basket which sold in November 2025 for $5,000 (all shown w/ bp) and the Pomo Gift Basket with similar star design listed for $20,000 by Cisco's Gallery.
