For your consideration is this issued stock certificate of forty shares from the Massachusetts and New Mexico Consolidated Mining Company in 1881. The Massachusetts and New Mexico Consolidated Mining Company, founded in 1880 and headquartered in Portland, Maine, managed a mining site in Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico. In 1882, the company purchased the assets of the Owl Mining Company, another company based in the same county. The company's land, including the Legal Tender ledge, was near the hamlet of Silver Flats. The enterprise mined minerals, including silver, and hauled it with ox teams. This mining certificate was issued on February 23rd, 1881 to Mathew H. H. for forty shares and was numbered the 880th issued stock. The left tells the buyer that there is 300,000 in capital stock with 300,000 shares available at 1.00 a piece. The back features a section for transferring, selling or assigning the stock to someone else. The front was signed by the treasurer, J.E. Abbott and the president at the time. The piece shows good condition overall with some slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no signs of major damage is noted. It measures 6 5/8" L x 9 1/2" W.
