This is an excellent carved wood polychrome painted bow from the Mandan Hidatsa Native Americans of the Missouri River region dating to the mid-19th Century. The piece shows a curved wood warrior’s bow which is expertly carved showing well made notches at the end, tapering design and slightly recurved pattern. The entire bow shows a brown pigment mineral paint with the outside edge showing a zig-zag river like red and yellow polychrome mineral pigment paint which extends the entity of the bow. On the inside edge a banded painted design. The bows is very similar to the example collected in 1845 from the Mandan of the Upper Missouri River at Fort Clark sold in our June 2020 sale and valued at $6,000. The piece shows very well-preserved condition and exceptional rare paint. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. Measures 49”L end to end and is about 1.5” by 1” thick.
