Featured in this lot is a beautiful oil on canvas painting titled, "Venus and Adonis" attributed to Austrian painter Marianne Stokes, after Titan circa 1880-1900s. Marianne Stokes was an Austrian painter born 1855 in Graz, Austria. She settled in England after her marriage to Adrian Scott Stokes, the landscape painter, whom she had met in Pont-Aven. Stokes was considered one of the leading women artists in Victorian England. She passed away in London, 1927, at the age of 72. The painting shows shows the young Adonis pulling himself away from Venus, his lover. The leash connected to the dog is held loosely on his fingers while his quiver of arrows lies on the ground next to him. Cupid can be seen in the top right hand corner in some trees holding a torch. Adonis is tying to pull away from Venus as he prepares for a hunt. The painting shows great detail and great contrasting colors giving the scene an almost melancholy feel to it. The painting is signed in the bottom left hand corner in black paint reading, "Marianne" and is set in a gold colored frame. The frame and painting show good condition overall with slight wear present to the frame but no wear on the painting. The visible art measures 39 3/8" L x 29 1/2" W, while the entire piece measures 48 1/4" L x 38 1/4" W x 2 3/4" D.*
