Presented in this lot is this First Edition Signed "Maynard Dixon: Artist of the West", by Wesley M. Burnside, Limited Special Edition 163/250, publisher Brigham Young University Press, hand-signed on title page, illustrated. While Dixon himself was a prolific writer and illustrator, this specific book is a retrospective on his life and work, featuring numerous color and black-and-white illustrations, and is considered a collector's item. Maynard Dixon (1875–1946) was a pioneering American artist who defined the visual language of the American West through a career spanning more than 50 years. Often called "The Last Cowboy in San Francisco," he transitioned from a successful career as an illustrator to become a master painter and muralist known for his modern, "stripped-down" aesthetic. He is famous for low horizons and monumental skies filled with simplified, marching cloud formations. He was deeply inspired by the arid beauty of Arizona and Utah and had a profound respect for Native American peoples, particularly the Hopi and Navajo, whom he depicted with dignity and a lack of sentimentality. The quarter brown leather over padded linen bound stamped hardcover is in beautiful condition throughout. Intact pages are bright and clean. Brown Buckskyn Slipcase is in good condition. Measures 11.25"W x 13.5"L x 1.5"D, weight is 4lb, 10oz.
