Featured in this lot is a colored lithograph of "Kee-Shes-Wa, A Fox Chief" originally from McKenney & Hall, published by F. W. Greenough, Philad. Drawn, printed and coloured by J.T. Bowen Lithographic. "A History of the Indian Tribes of North America" by James Hall and Thomas L. McKenney, is a three-volume collection of Native American biographies and accompanying lithograph portraits, and is one of the most important works ever published on the American Indians' field, a landmark in American culture. The artwork is wonderfully and professionally crafted lithograph construction that shows Kees-Shes-Wa, a Fox Indian chief. Charles Bird King was an American portrait painter that was commissioned by McKenney to paint the portraits of the Indians. The lithograph is marked as follows: "Kee-Shes-Wa, A Fox Chief - Published by F.W. Greenough, Philad - Drawn Printed & Coloured at J.T. Bown's Lithographic Establishment No. 94 Walnut St. - Entered According to act of Congress in the Year 1838 by F.W. Greenough, in Clerks Office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Penn." The condition of this lithograph is well preserved with age tanning to the paper, two very slight scuffs noted at top left corner. Measures approximately 14"W x 19.75"L.
