Featured in this lot is a Signed Limited Edition Michael Gentry, "Crazy Horse - Sacred Warrior", 1993, #549/900. From Gentry's description, "...This fearless Oglala leader, Wearer of the Sacred Shirt, would fight against all intruders and would never be tempted by Government forces to surrender his free will, to enter into reservation life. However on September 5, 1877, while visiting Fort Robinson, Crazy Horse was stabbed in the back by a soldier's bayonet as he fought to escape capture. It is said by historians and Oglala elders at Pine Ridge Reservation, S.D., that no existing photos of Crazy Horse can be authenticated. However after five years of extensive research and with the assistance of Lakota elders, historians and members of the Ziolkowski family who are completing the Crazy Horse Monument in Custer, S.D., I have completed an image that I firmly believe mirrors that of the strange and amazing Lakota warrior, upon his famous paint war horse, as he stands to protect Pa Sapa, the Sacred Black Hills of South Dakota."
A painter who focused on Native American tribes and known for Indian action genre-figure, Michael Gentry (1940-1994) was half Cherokee Indian, and had his studio in Washington state.
