This is a fantastic circa 1950-1970’s vintage pair of men’s Alaskan Inuit Eskimo Mukluks done in sealskin, caribou and hide. Mukluks are a soft, supple knee-high boots traditionally made of sealskin, caribou, or reindeer skin and originally worn by the Native people of the Arctic, including the Inuit, Aleut, and Yupik tribes. The name Mukluk is derived from the Yupik word 'maklak', meaning "bearded seal", in reference to the bearded seal skin used to make the soles of the boots. This pair shows the traditional parfleche rawhide hard bases in Caribou with Seal fur high top having Indian tanned hide wrapping ties and trade clothe top with hide and lace ties. A nice men’s set that is well kept, stiff hides, some very slight loss and a few repairs, but overall good. Dan Paynich Great Falls, Montana collection. Each measures about 10.5”L sole by 14.5”H ankle by 4.5”W. Total weight of 1 lbs. 14 oz.
