The lot features an original photograph of the entire Millers Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show troop from circa 1900’s. In the second row at the very center a young Pawnee Bill (Gordon William Lillie) can been seen wearing his famous hat with his iconic mustache visible. The photograph includes 29 Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Native American Indians. Such wonderfully renowned individuals who most likely are represented in this image and performed with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show are Lillian Smith (performing as “Pricess Wenona”), Bill Pickett, Bessie Herberg, Bee Ho Gray, Tom Mix, Jack Hoxie, Mexican Joe, Ross Hettan, Buffalo Bill Cody (William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody), Pawnee Bill, Zach Mulhall, Lucille Milhall, Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson, Buck Jones, Chester Byers, Chief Iron Tails, Milt, Hinkle, Billy Lorette, Luka Chkhartishvila (Princes Lucca), Art Acord, and occasionally Will Rogers (who was never formerly employed with the 101 Ranch, but was documented visiting many of his friends and having trick roping contests and events). The photograph shows numerous performers posing for an unknown photographer. Provenance: The piece comes from the personal collection of Dot Vernon. Dot Vernon performed with the Miller’s 101 Ranch Wild West Show and is present in this photograph. Dot Vernon Bolton, once called “Queen of the Cowgirls” got her start in the Western Show world when she was 12 years old when her family sent her with Pawnee Bill with his Wild West Show, as they were family friends. She later went to England with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show and gave a command performance for the English Royal Family presumably including King George V. She then later toured the US with Barnum & Bailey’s Circus and also with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. The 101 Ranch Wild West Show was founded by Colonel George Washington Miller, a Confederate Army veteran of the Civil War, after being motivated by his dear friend and neighbor Major Gordon W. Lillie, also known as Pawnee Bill. Pawnee Bill helped Miller start the show and performed in many of his acts. Dot Vernon was introduced to the Miller 101 by Pawnee Bill, with both being found in this photograph. The photograph comes in an envelope hand written on the front “101 Ranch / 101 RANCH”. This is truly a fantastic original authentic example and has never been seen by the public. Photograph measures 8”x10”. Original Miller Bros 101 Ranch Wild West Show photographs are exceedingly rare with few examples being brought to sale, such as the photograph sold by Brian Lebel's Old West Auction for $5,900. This photograph is thought to have been one of the earliest photographs known to exist of the Miller 101 Ranch Wild West show.
