Provided in this lot for your consideration is a fine example of an original Model 1873 Springfield Cavalry Carbine, chambered for .45-70. After inception, the Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor carbine was the standard issue in every major Indian War engagement, including, but not limited to the Battle of the Rosebud, the Battle of the Little Bighorn, to Wounded Knee. The carbine is marked in numerous places with correct and clear U.S. issue proof marks, reading; "U.S. Model 1873" on the breech block, "U.S. Springfield" on the lock plate, accompanied by the Eagle motif stamp, a correct carbine stock with inspection cartouche on the left side, "P" proof stamp on the bottom of the stock - behind the trigger guard, and all correct barrel marks, showing "VP" over an eagles head. Lastly, the rear sight is marked with a "C", indicating the sights compatibility with carbines. This historical carbine was put head-to-head in a military board examination against 99 rifles, and won the contest, featuring an extremely well-rounded design, utilizing 22" barrel (for carbines), trapdoor breech block, adjustable ladder rear sight paired with a blade front sight, trap-door butt plate for a cleaning rod, and a handy sling ring bar. Overall, this carbine shows very-good, original condition, showcasing an uncleaned blue'd finish, which is naturally aged with deep, warm patina, contrasted by gorgeous wooden fixtures - in excellent condition for age. In addition to the beautiful aesthetics of the carbine, it also boasts good mechanical condition, with a tight action, and a bright bore, showing strong rifling. The rifle was produced in 1882, and qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 188722.
