This lot gives you the opportunity to bid on a RARE Colt collectable, in the form of a Civil War Issued, Colt Model 1861 Special Musket, from the 1863 year of production. The Colt Model 1861 was produced between 1861 and 1865, and showed two versions - the civilian models which were rejected by U.S. Military inspectors, and lacked many crucial markings, and the Union issued model - This rifle falls under the later. Like previously stated, U.S. Military issued Model 1861's displayed numerous stampings which set them apart from the civilian models, those stampings include an eagle stamped onto the percussion bolster, U.S. marking on the top of the butt-plate, "VP" over an eagles head proof stamp on the left side of the barrel, "G" inspectors mark on the upper tang, "M" inspectors stamp on the left side of the barrel, and two stock inspector cartouches on the left side of the stock, opposite of the lock plate - This rifle shows ALL of the necessary proofs in sharp condition. Additionally, the rifle is marked on the rear of the lock plate "1863" attributing its early production, and reading "U.S. - COLT'S PT F.A. MFG CO. - Hartford CT." on the un-cleaned lock plate. Early Colt muskets were also identified by their simple barrel bands that screw-tighten at the bottom, compared to later examples which showed a more familiar spring clip on the side of the stock. As well, early Colt rifle muskets were finished "in the white", meaning the barrels and major metal components were polished bright, instead of blue'd. Lastly, the rifle utilizes a 40 inch barrel, chambered for .58 caliber, and a three tiered, leaf rear sight, marked "300" and "500" for adjustable yardage. Overall, this 152 year old "attic find" rifle shows FANTASTIC collectors grade condition - boasting uncleaned metal components which have aged gracefully showing uniform grey, mixing naturally with soft brown. The walnut fixtures show an attractive dark color, with absolutely no evidence of sanding or refinishing, which would have obliterated the inspectors cartouches. Even the bore, which was wiped clean of decades of dust, shows bright condition, with sharp rifling. On top of the good aesthetic condition, the rifle boasts excellent mechanical condition, with a tight lock, and a good functioning action, with nice springs. Again, this is a completely unmolested example of a very collectable firearm from one of America's finest and most celebrated manufactures - Typically these rifles are found with over-cleaned or polished metal components, re-finished stocks, and broken sights and mechanics. The musket qualifies as an antique blackpowder long gun, and doesn't require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: NSN.
