Presented in this lot is a World War II Montana 381st Infantry Regiment Footlocker, 1942. Originally famous saddleries and leathermakers, The Tom Padgitt Company as well as the Padgitt Brothers Company supplied both the British and US militaries during World War I with gun carriages. Padgitt name and year located underneath top panel. Footlocker has metal hinges, lock clasps and primitive wood side handles similar to ammo and packing crates of the period, metal reinforcing strips along sides. This footlocker is stencil paint labeled on the top and front panels "Tank Co. 381 INF Bozeman MONT", top panel has original supply label, "Quartermaster Supply Officer Utah General Depot US Army Ogden, Utah Co G 381ST INF. Regt. (RES) 7 West Main St. Bozeman, Montana Acct. NO. M-19 S.T. No 118501 PKG. No. 21 REQ. No. 24042-00063-51" Front panel also has original inventory label 1944, which has physical descriptions for clothing. Company G of the 381st Infantry Regiment, most notably known for their involvement in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II, saw heavy combat on the island, particularly during the assault on "Hacksaw Ridge" where they encountered significant casualties while attacking a fortified Japanese position, with some accounts detailing a large number of casualties suffered by Company G in a short time frame when they reached the top of the ridge and encountered a concrete pillbox. This footlocker is in amazingly preserved condition, some separation and damage exhibited to top edges, most of original paint has scraped off through normal use.
