The lot features an exceptional authentic fully beaded bandolier bag from the Cree Native American Indians of Montana and dating to the 19th Century. The piece shows a classic design of a large shoulder bag with flowing floral beaded pattern on gray ground. The Bandolier or Bandoleer bag shows a black trade clothe and trade velvet construction with a fully beaded top strap and fully beaded bag. Such excellent glass trade seed beads featured in the floral beadwork of this bandolier bag include all 19th Century period correct colors as semi-transparent, greasy yellow, semi-transparent amber, light green, Cheyenne Pink, padre sky blue, cobalt, semi-transparent rose, violet and semi-transparent green. The large wide shoulder strap is fully beaded and shares the same incredible beaded design with a trade clothe backing and trade clothe piping. The piece even features the original whimsical Czechoslovakian bugle tube beaded fringe with Germantown bright red, blue and white yarn fringe. Provenance: From a large Native American weapons and beadwork collection in Great Falls, Montana. Other similar examples with less prominent craftsmanship and beadwork have sold at Allard Auction in 2010 for $5,400, at Jackson’s Auction in 2004 for $5,000, at Cowan’s Auction in 2013 for $7,200, and as high as $43,200 at Cowan’s Auction 2014. This is truly a wonderful authentic example of a fine 1870’s Chippewa Bandolier Bag. Measures overall 13.25”W x 46”L with the straps being 5”W each.
