For your consideration is a fossilized Cephalopod Scaphite from Big Horn county Montana. This fossil was removed from the Bear Paw shale which is a geologic formation from the Late Cretaceous period. Scaphites are a genus of heteromorph ammonites that were wide spread during the Late Cretaceous period. This piece is a wonderful example of the species. You can see the curl from its initial stage and the bend as it grows shorter and more erect in its terminal stage. The fossil measures 7" x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".
