For your consideration this lot has two vintage Montana mining surveyor maps: Martina Gold Mining & Reduction Company Martina, Montana 1916, and Deer Creek Quartz Lode Mines in the Yourname Mining District of Powell County Montana, 1946. The lure of gold brought a great influx of settlers to Idaho and Montana during the early 1860s. First centered around Bannack and Virginia City, the miners quickly spread out around the territory seeking new gold fields. The early settlements were governed by mining districts, which set rules for claiming land, recorded the claims, and provided a primitive form of government. The early claims were predominantly placer mines, but by 1870 there were a significant number of underground quartz mines. These mines required a large investment in stamp mills, reduction works, and smelters to treat the ore. Different mining districts produced different metals depending on the geology of the area. Because of the importance of mining to Montana’s historic development and economy, a large number of records were saved documenting the industry. Martina was a gold-mining camp which came to life in the 1870's. At its peak Martina had a hotel, general store, blacksmith shop, and several saloons, in addition to a post office. Gold mining continued in the Martina area off-and-on until the 1940's. Both maps have surveyor/engineer signatures, are extensively detailed, Deer Creek map right bottom corner is torn off but appears to have no details relevant to the mines, both maps are in excellent condition. Martina map opened measures 30.5"L x 18.75"W; Deer Creek map opened measures 26"L x 21.75"W
