Featured in this lot is this Navajo Klagetoh Trading Post rug circa 1890-1910. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that features a large central traditional Klagetoh decoration that includes a border with a feathered decoration inside the border. The coloration of this rug include heathered dark brown, red, and cream set to a heathered grey field. Klagetoh is located just south of Ganado and 10 miles north of Wide Ruins. The English translation is “hidden springs”. The Klagetoh weaving is very similar to the Ganado rugs, but with a predominantly gray background instead of the Ganado’s red. Some experts do not consider Klagetoh a specific regional rug but a sub-type of Ganado. The condition of this Navajo rug is good with some wear consistent with the age of the rug but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug are 60" x 91. The thread count is 126 threads per square inch. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
