For your consideration is a Vintage Navajo Sterling SIlver Palomino Turquoise Cuff Bracelet, circa late century. This cuff bracelet features a wonderfully and professionally crafted sterling silver construction with a centre bezel mounted Palomino turquoise, silver hogans, braided silver rope and stamped geometric designs of traditional Navajo cultural symbols. Navajo silversmithing began in the mid-19th century, initiated by Atsidi Sani (“Old Smith”) who learned techniques from Mexican smiths. Originally crafting bridle parts and buttons from melted coins, artisans incorporated turquoise by 1880. The trade shifted toward commercial jewelry for tourists around 1900, with women joining the craft by 1918. While turquoise had been used by Southwest tribes for centuries, it was first set into Navajo silver around 1880. Mid-20th century smiths like Kenneth Begay (the "Father of Modern Navajo Jewelry") elevated the craft to a contemporary fine art, moving away from tourist-centric designs. The reverse is stamped, "STERLING". The bracelet is in beautiful condition. Measures 6.25" inside circumference including 1" opening, .625"W x 2.25"L x 2"D, weight is 16.5 grams.
