Featured in this lot is a Garden City, Kansas subpoena circa 1883 signed by Newton Jasper Earp born in 1837 and died in 1928; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The subpoena features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows an official subpoena from the state of Kansas and the city of Garden City. The subpoena is an order to constable Newton Earp to bring this document to E. Handy for a summons to answer for a bond for a deed. The subpoena is signed by Newton Earp in two places on the front and comes complete with an original museum tag that reads as follows: Newton Jasper Earp - Older half-brother of Wyatt Earp - here he signed this subpoena in 1883 as the constable. Newton Jasper Earp (October 7, 1837 – December 18, 1928) was an American pioneer born in Kentucky in 1837. He was the eldest child of Nicholas Porter Earp and Abigail Storm. He was the half-brother of Old West lawmen Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp. After Earp's return from the American Civil War, he married Nancy Jane "Jennie" Adam in Marion County, Missouri on 12 Sep 1865. The condition of this State of Kansas subpoena is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage with some slight browning to the page consistent with age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition.
