Featured in this lot we have the complete volumes I & II set of the "North American Indians" by George Catlin, 1857, Henry G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden, London publisher. "Letters and Notes of the Manners, Customs, and Conditions of the North American Indians" was written during an eight years travel amongst the wildest tribes of Indians in North America during circa 1832-1839. Catlin visited eighteen tribes, including the Pawnee, Ponca, and Omaha in the south and the Mandan, Hidatsa, Cheyenne, Crow, Assiniboine, and Blackfeet in the north. There he produced the most vivid and penetrating portraits of his career. George Catlin (1796-1872) was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the Old West. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. The two volume set shows four hundred illustrations that were originally carefully engraved from Catlin's original paintings. The melon-coloured cloth bound hardcovers are in good overall condition, slight scuffing noted to cover edges. Age tanning and foxing noted, no other obvious marring exhibited. Each volume measures 6.75"W x 10.25"L x 1.5"D, total weight 6lb, 2oz.
