The lot features a beautiful set of beaded Indian hide large men’s moccasins with hard soles from the Northern Cheyenne of Spotted Horse, Wyoming. The set appears to be circa early 1900’s. The back of each moccasin has old collection tags that are marked, “Northern Cheyenne Wyoming / Cheyenne Spotted Horse.” The large set exhibits Indian tanned hide construction that is sinew sewn with thick parfleche rawhide Buffalo Bison hard sole bases. The tops are covered in a classic Northern Plains geometric pattern commonly referred to as “Buffalo Track” done in early period glass trade seed beads that are also sinew sewn. The set is well kept and likely preserved or refurbished showing little to no bead loss. The back of each moccasin has two small Indian tanned hide fringes. The period beads show colors of chalk white, red white heart, semi-transparent medium green, medium green, and blue. Similar sets of moccasins are documented in photographs of other Cheyenne and Northern Cheyenne members from the 19th Century. Provenance: From a large Native American weapons and beadwork collection in California. Soles measure 12-inches long by 4-inches wide by 5.5-inches high.
