This is a beautiful split horn Buffalo war bonnet with collection tag marked, “Brule Sioux Wanblee South Dakota” on both sides. The war bonnet headdress exhibits thick winter Great American Bison Buffalo hide with fur with tail trailer. Atop is a set of split Buffalo horns tied with Indian tanned hide. The front shows a brow band with geometric beadwork using old original glass trade seed beads and is sinew sewn. The bead colors are chalk white, red white heart and cobalt. The piece shows Indian tanned hide fringes with a red ocher / ochre dye and drops of horse tail hair. There are four medicine bundles with dark red/brown color tied on. The top has a miniature parfleche rawhide bonnet headdress case in traditional Northern Plains and Plateau pattern of polychrome painting and Indian hide fringes. The side shows a Buffalo Bison cutout of parfleche rawhide also tied on with Indian hide with red and blue and black paint. The top has a horse tail scalp-like lock with braided hair having a wrap of red wool stroud with beadwork. The tips of each horn have padre sky light blue beadwork with ermine hide fringes having a red dyed finish. The tail trailer has fringes of horse tail hair and ermine hides as well. The inside of the cap shows sinew sewing and a large band of parfleche rawhide tied with hide lacing. Truly a beautiful piece that displays well. Measures overall 43-inch long by 15-inches wide. Wanblee, South Dakota is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for the Sioux. Provenance: The headdress was part of the massive Spring Native American and Gentleman’s Auction by Jackson’s where the split horn buffalo bonnet was noted as being of traditional form.
