For your consideration this lot includes two (2) Northern Plains Catlinite Pipes and Wood Flat Stems; one "plains" pipe and one "elbow" pipe. Pipestone (Catlinite) is the sacred red clay stone that American Indians use for making prayer and ceremonial pipes. Catlinite pipes and figures are powerfully connected to the histories, cultures and practices of many Plains tribal groups. Native Americans have mined and used it for over two thousand years. The stone is considered sacred and is used and traded by many Native American tribes. Several Catlinite pipes and effigies have been found in archaeological excavations in North America. The Plains Pipe is based on a pipe that was commonly used during the European contact period. Because these pipes were used ceremonially to bind treaties, they became known as Peace Pipes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Native Americans of the Plains often used the Elbow Pipe for personal use, and is typical of pipes used by both men and women for everyday, casual smoking. The Plains pipe is signed underneath by the artist, "Big Eagle". The Plains Pipe is in good overall condition, the flat stem exhibits scuffing and a rich patina throughout. Pipe measures 2.25"W x 3.75"L, stem is 11.75"L The Elbow Pipe is two-toned, exhibits a glue repair, measures 2"W x 3"L, stem is 9.5"L
