The lot features a pipe tomahawk with a Papal cross cutout attributed to the Northern Plains of the Reservation Period. The head appears to be a common blacksmith casting with a typical flaring western blade having an rear curled basal process spur prominent chevron and tall thin pipe bowl. At the center is a traditional Papal Cross which is crudely cutout and on one side having a slight stamped border. The eylet hole is a tear drop holding a carved wood haft handle with tappered body. The head is slightly lose and exposes a dark stained area where a gasket would have been. There are four bands of three brass trade tacks on either side. The handle has a cutout for a drop and comes to a point at the smoking tip. The 20th Century piece displays well. There are several nearly identical examples, many of which are represented as Reservation Period such as this piece. Head is about 8.5"L by 3.5" wide across the bottom of the blade. The tomahawk measures21" in length.
