Featured in this lot is this October 3rd, 1881 Frank Stilwell Case witness expense payment motion; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The document features a dictation of a motion to reimburse the expenses accrued by the witnesses to be present in the court room for the trial of Frank Stilwell in relation to the Wells Fargo & Co. stagecoach robbery. The document features Judge Wells Spicer's signature on the rear of the document and includes the J.O. Dunbar , Treasurer of Cochise County, A.T. notary stamp on the back of the document. The document lists all the witnesses present that day. Frank C. Stilwell (1856 – March 20, 1882) was an outlaw Cowboy who killed at least two men in Cochise County during 1877–82. Both killings were considered to have been self-defense. For four months he was a deputy sheriff in Tombstone, Arizona Territory for Cochise County Sheriff Johnny Behan. Stilwell owned interests in several mines and various businesses, including a saloon, a wholesale liquor business, a stage line, and at his death livery stables in Charleston and Bisbee. He was also a partner in a Bisbee-area saloon with ex-Texas Ranger Pete Spence. The condition of this Arizona Territory document is well preserved with a tear in the right hand upper corner and some browning to the pages consistent with the age of the document and shows a well preserved overall condition.
