Featured in this lot is an Original 1894 Tucker & Dorsey Alarm Till. Tucker and Dorsey Manufacturing made both hardware and woodenware products. The company was established in 1865 in Indianapolis, IN and became one of the largest household and business products companies in the world. Tucker was the inventor of, and received a patent for, the first Cash Drawer. It was designed to be mounted under the display counter in a retail business and would sound a loud bell when opened. This alerted the store owner/manager any time the cash drawer was opened, a real deterrent to theft. The drawer also has a unique combination device that allows the manager to pull a set of levers disabling the bell when he wanted to reconcile the drawer.
This alarm till has Security Alarm Till 1894 St. Louis printed on the top, but the design is Tucker & Dorsey. Inside the till is attached a printed instruction sheet titled Security Till. The removable wood insert was made from one solid piece of wood, built-in lower drawer has 4 slots for paper bills and two more cups for coins. The hardwood drawer face is scrolled and finished. The alarm till is in good overall working condition, the pull key mechanism appears to be in good working order. Exterior wood of the till has scratches and chipping, majority of original finish is intact. Measures 16.25" x 18" x 5.5"H
