This is an original authentic 1904 Charles M. Russell chromolithograph titled, “A Bad Hoss” published by Charles Scribner. The piece is signed and dated in the lower left, “CM Russell (Buffalo Skull) 1904 in the plate. This rare original chromolithograph was done during the lifetime of Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926). C.M. Russell is Montana’s finest artist and the most renowned and well-known cowboy artist of the 19th and 20th Century. This piece was published and copyrighted by Charles Scribners Sons of New York and printed by Grignard & Co. The artwork is marked at the bottom left, “COPYRIGHT 1905 CHARLES SCRIBNERS SONS N.Y.” and lower right, “A GRIGNARD & COMPANY, N.Y.”. These chromolithographs are the closest original piece to a true painting and are increasingly rare with only a few being offered on the public market such as A Bad Hoss which sold for $2,160 at Santa Fe Art Auction, A Bad Hoss which sold for $2,070 at Altermann Galleries & Auctioneers and The Custer Fight which sold for $6,000 at Santa Fe Art Auction (shown w/ premiums). The piece has been professionally framed showing a wood and leather wrapped finish. The visible art area is measured 17.25”x12” and the frame is 21.25”x26.25”.
